Feed Design Lab, the practical research and education centre for innovation and sustainability in the animal feed industry, has taken its renovated pilot plant into use. Six years after the opening of the first test line, considerable investments were made to modernise and professionalise the facility.
For this prestigious project, Euro Manchetten & Compensators was responsible for supplying all the flexible connections used to join the pipework and the various machines into a high-quality and fully functional installation.
Besides increasing the production capacity and energy efficiency, investments were made in optimizing hygiene, as this topic plays an increasingly important role in the animal feed industry. For this project we worked 18 partner companies Everyone was allowed to express their specialism in order to create an optimal process.
As a specialist in flexible connections and worldwide hygiene standards, we opted for special cuffs made of Poly-Urethane, a highly durable and wear-resistant material with a high tensile strength. Depending on its composition, granules can cause rapid wear. In addition to its hygienic properties, this material is also transparent, which creates the possibility for operators to detect blockages and product accumulation at an earlier stage. Since Feed Design Lab is constantly testing changing processes, this risk will always be a threat to efficiency and hygiene.
Because all our flexible connections can be made to measure, it is possible to work with various types of couplings, as was necessary in this project. Various types of couplings were used including JACOB, hose clamps and DIN flanges with bolts. This demonstrates a good reflection of the most common couplings within the industry and among the various partners who worked on this project.
The cuffs come from the Netherlands and are produced by Filcoflex, already operating internationally in Food and Pharma and therefore experienced with high hygiene requirements and changing process techniques.
All flexibles are tested and certified according to ATEX Explosion regulations and Food Safety regulations in accordance with European, but also American and Chinese standards.
During the summer months the project was realised, but due to the measures concerning Covid-19, a festive opening unfortunately did not take place. Meanwhile, the factory can be visited virtually. Click here to make an appointment.

When Feed Design Lab was launched in 2014, a pilot plant was opened for research on new raw materials & production techniques and training activities. Companies from all over the world are interested in the extensive testing possibilities. FDL can thus make an important contribution to, among other things, the application of circular raw materials, improving animal health and reducing the CO2 footprint of animal feeds.
